Power Adapter

Power Adapter

For a power adapter I use a slightly modified Psion Series 5 mains adapter. All I´ve done to it is replace the jack plug it came with by one that fits the Coolpix 900.

The Psion adapter looPower Adaptorks like a UK mains plug (it´s also available in similar forms in the US and Europe) and has a rated output of 6V at 1A at the right polarity - negative outer/positive inner - just right for the Coolpix 900. Cost in the UK is about 20 UK Pounds Sterling.

The plug I´ve fitted is one I got from a local Tandy store. The description is: Coaxial Power Plugs (2) 5.0 mm Outer Diameter 2.1 mm Inner Diameter. The product code was 274-1567B and its fits the socket in the camera very snugly without being at all loose.

Note: I bought my Coolpix 900 before power adapters were available for it in the UK, so I resorted to the above kludge. Unless you know exactly what you´re doing I recommend you get the Nikon mains adapter. You never know, you might avoid damaging your rather nice and expensive digital camera. On the other hand - why bother with a mains adapter at all - read the next paragraph...

I almost never use the power adapter as I never transfer images from the camera to my PC via the serial cable: I always transfer the images by taking the CompactFlash card out of the camera, slot it into a CompactFlash Adapter and plug that directly into a PC Card (PCMCIA) slot in my Toshiba laptop. The transfer happens in seconds and imposes no drain whatsoever on the camera´s power source.
